What started in 2023 as a creative way to bring neighbors together and bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and the community has now become a beloved tradition on Chicago’s Southwest Side. The Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) adopted Walk with a Doc (WWAD) two years ago with a simple but powerful goal: to offer residents a welcoming space to get moving, connect with one another, and ask their most pressing health questions directly to local medical professionals. Through these walks, SWOP hopes to build trust, encourage healthy habits, and provide accessible, on-the-spot health information in a relaxed, community-centered environment.
On Saturday, June 7th, 2025, SWOP proudly hosted their first Walk with a Doc of the year at Senka Park. Community members of all ages gathered for a morning of movement, conversation, and wellness. The event kicked off with opening remarks from SWOP’s health team, followed by a brief health talk from a participating physician who addressed common concerns about summer safety and managing chronic conditions in warmer weather. Afterward, neighbors and health professionals walked side by side around the park’s walking path, creating a casual setting for people to ask personal health questions, swap stories, and simply enjoy each other’s company.
Since its launch, Walk with a Doc has steadily grown in attendance and impact. Beyond promoting physical activity, it has become an important space for community connection and empowerment. Saturday’s walk was no exception — filled with laughter, insightful conversations, and new connections formed along the trail. As the summer continues, SWOP looks forward to hosting more walks and continuing to create spaces where health and community go hand in hand.
