On August 22nd and 29th, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), in partnership with The Resurrection Project and Old National Bank, hosted a two-part Homebuyer Education Workshop in English, giving community members and future homeowners the tools, information, and hands-on guidance needed to take the next steps toward purchasing a home.

Following the successful Homebuyer Education Workshops held in Spanish in July, these English-language sessions continued SWOP’s efforts to make the homebuying process more accessible to families throughout the Southwest Side. For many prospective homeowners, purchasing a home can feel out of reach due to a lack of information, uncertainty around credit, financial barriers, or simply not knowing where to begin. These workshops were designed to help break down those barriers by giving participants a clearer understanding of the homebuying process and the resources available to them.

Throughout the two sessions, participants had the opportunity to learn about important aspects of purchasing a home, including understanding credit, preparing financially, navigating the homebuying process, and knowing what to expect along the way. Rather than simply providing information, the workshops gave attendees an opportunity to engage directly with professionals and ask questions about their individual circumstances.

Participants who complete the workshop series and a one-on-one consultation with a Home Purchase Advisor are able to earn a homebuyer certificate, providing another valuable step toward becoming prepared and confident prospective homeowners.

SWOP’s housing work is rooted in the belief that families should have access to the knowledge and opportunities necessary to build stability and generational wealth in their communities. By continuing to provide educational opportunities like these workshops, SWOP and its partners are working to ensure that a lack of information does not become another barrier standing between families and the possibility of owning a home.
