On July 10th, 2026, the Southwest Organizing Project's (SWOP) Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P) team transformed Gage Park at 56th Street and Maplewood Avenue into a hub of laughter, friendly competition, and community connection during its Community Softball and Field Day. Residents of all ages came together for an afternoon designed to strengthen relationships, create positive memories, and provide a safe, welcoming space where neighbors could simply enjoy being together.
The event drew a strong turnout of community members and was made even more special by the participation of the summer youth from GoodKids MadCity Englewood (GKMC-E). Throughout the afternoon, children, teens, and adults joined one another in a variety of activities that encouraged teamwork, healthy competition, and plenty of fun. Whether stepping up to the plate for a softball game, racing in sack races, diving out of the way during dodgeball, or kicking a soccer ball across the field, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
The celebration extended beyond the games. Families gathered to enjoy free food while a live DJ kept the park filled with upbeat music and high energy. The lively atmosphere was contagious, drawing neighbors out of their homes to stop by, cheer on participants, and join in the festivities. What began as a community event quickly grew into a neighborhood celebration where new relationships were formed and familiar faces came together.
When asked about how they were enjoying their experience, one of the youth from GKMC-E, shared this. “We’ve been doing a lot of different things this summer and I really like it when we can step outside and just be kids in community, you know? It doesn’t feel forced, it just feels like we’re hanging out with new people.” She continues to say. “We’re learning about another organization and how they use their experience to bring community together to promote non-violence.”
Events like the Community Softball and Field Day reflect CP4P's ongoing commitment to violence prevention by creating opportunities for positive engagement and meaningful connections. By bringing residents together in spaces filled with joy, recreation, and fellowship, SWOP continues to help build stronger, safer neighborhoods where community members look out for one another and young people can experience positive alternatives through shared experiences.
