On August 16th, 2025, the Southwest Organizing Project’s (SWOP) Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P) team partnered with member institution TGI Movement to host their 2nd Annual Back to School Block Party on 63rd and Campbell. The event, held at TGI’s community space known as Da Oasis, provided families in the neighborhood with free bookbags, school supplies, and access to resources as they prepared for the upcoming school year.
The block party transformed the corner into a space of joy and connection. Families enjoyed free food, music from a live DJ, a bouncy house for children, and even a gaming truck, creating a safe and festive atmosphere in the heart of the community.
Calvin Brown, Assistant Program Director for SWOP’s CP4P team, reflected on the importance of these gatherings: “Events like this are about showing our community that we see them, that we care, and that they deserve the same investment and opportunities as any other neighborhood. In places that have often been disinvested in, it’s crucial to create spaces of joy, safety, and unity for our young people and families.”
By blending resources with celebration, SWOP and TGI Movement continue to demonstrate what’s possible when the community comes together to support one another.
