On August 1st, 2025, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) and GoodKids MadCity Englewood (GKMC-E) teamed up once again to host their bi-weekly Youth Kickback — but this one had a twist. Dubbed the Youth Kickback Olympics, this special edition brought together fun, friendly competition, and community connection at Lindblom Park.
These kickbacks are more than just a way to spend a Friday afternoon — they’re intentional spaces built to give young people a safe, welcoming environment to engage with one another and with organizers who are deeply invested in their development as leaders and changemakers. At the same time, they offer room to unwind, laugh, and simply be kids in a world that often asks too much of them too soon.
This week’s Olympic-themed event featured team-based games and challenges designed to spark joy, teamwork, and a little bit of healthy competition. Youth formed squads and competed in sack races, flag football, and tug-of-war. Laughter, music, and cheering became common during the events as teens encouraged one another through the challenges. Whether they were racing against the clock or hyping each other up from the sidelines, every young person there was part of something bigger than just a game.
At the end of the day, medals and small prizes were handed out — but the real win was the continued strengthening of youth bonds and trust between community organizers and the young people they serve. These moments remind everyone of what’s possible when youth are supported, seen, and celebrated.
