On May 1st, 2025, organizers and leaders from the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) proudly stood shoulder to shoulder with over 35,000 people as part of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR)’s annual #MayDay March in Chicago. The powerful march stretched from Union Park to Grant Park, bringing together a vibrant, united front in support of labor workers, immigrant rights, and equitable, accessible education for all.
SWOP joined its allies to show unwavering support for those whose voices are often marginalized — workers fighting for fair wages and safe conditions, immigrant families seeking dignity and security, and students advocating for the resources they need to thrive. The energy on the streets was undeniable — with chants, signs, and powerful testimonies reaffirming the commitment to justice, dignity, and human rights.
For SWOP, participating in May Day is a reflection of their ongoing mission to build collective power and push back against policies and narratives designed to keep communities isolated and afraid. As attacks on public education, workers’ rights, and immigrant protections intensify across the country, SWOP remains steadfast in its belief that organized communities have the power to demand and create meaningful change.
May Day 2025 was a reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of showing up, not just in moments of crisis but in everyday struggles for equity and respect. SWOP is proud to have marched alongside its neighbors, friends, and partners and will continue to fight for a Chicago where everyone belongs.
