Southwest Organizing Project Hosts Second Walk with a Doc Event at Senka Park 2025

At the heart of the Southwest Organizing Project’s (SWOP) Healthy Chicago Zone initiative is a commitment to ensuring that resources for medical assistance, food security, and more are reaching those who have the greatest needs. One way SWOP is doing this is through the Walk with a Doc (WWAD) events — a community-centered series designed to bring residents together for light physical activity, provide a platform to engage with medical professionals, and encourage healthy lifestyle habits. These walks offer a unique opportunity for participants to ask pressing health questions in an informal, approachable setting while building relationships with one another and SWOP’s community health team.

On Saturday, June 21, 2025, SWOP’s Healthy Chicago Zone team hosted their second Walk with a Doc event of the year at Senka Park in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. Community members of all ages gathered under clear skies to enjoy a casual group walk around the park while chatting with one another and Martha Menchaca, MD, PhD, a medical professional from UIC. Residents asked about managing blood pressure, healthy eating on a budget, and how to stay active during busy summer months — receiving thoughtful, practical advice from the attending health experts.

Beyond the health conversations, the walk sparked new relationships among neighbors, many of whom expressed gratitude for the chance to meet other community members in a relaxed, supportive environment. With music, light refreshments, and giveaways to keep spirits high, the event reflected SWOP’s belief that health and wellness go hand-in-hand with community connection.

The Healthy Chicago Zone team plans to continue hosting Walk with a Doc events throughout the year, aiming to build momentum around collective health, create safe public spaces, and ensure neighbors have direct access to trusted health resources right in their own backyard.
