On July 27th, 2025, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) stood shoulder to shoulder with fellow members of United Power for Action and Justice for a public action aimed at securing Mayor Brandon Johnson’s continued commitment to the Reclaiming Chicago campaign. The event marked a pivotal moment in the coalition’s ongoing effort to revitalize neighborhoods across Chicago’s south and west sides.
Led by co-chairs Dr. Richard Townsell or Lawndale Christian Development Corporation and Ms. Lizette Carretero of The Resurrection Project, the action celebrated the Reclaiming Chicago Initiative’s move to break ground this year on 75 additional lots to build affordable, quality housing. These developments are more than just bricks and mortar—they represent stability, dignity, and the promise of thriving communities.
During the action, homeowners like Leonardo Garcia and Janay Brooks—who have already benefitted from the Reclaiming Chicago campaign—shared emotional testimonies. Speaking to the crowd, one homeowner said, “This is more than just a house. I can proudly say that I now own property in a community that I grew up in.” Their stories grounded the action in lived experience and gave voice to what’s truly at stake: hope and generational wealth and security.
Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the action and reaffirmed his support for the coalition’s demands—signaling ongoing alignment with Reclaiming Chicago's mission to transform vacant lots into vibrant communities. The coalition’s ability to hold public officials accountable is a testament to its organizing power and the urgency of the issue.
The action also celebrated the expansion of United Power’s reach with the welcoming of two new member institutions: BLR Center for Flourishing Communities and Habitat Chicago. Their joining reflects a growing momentum and a shared vision for what a reclaimed Chicago can look like.
The action also shouted out elected officials who have stood with the campaign and some who were in attendance including Alders Jeanette Taylor and Jeylu B. Gutierrez, as well as Senator Lakesia Collins, Representatives Aaron Ortiz and Sonya Harper, and Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García and Mike Quigly. Their presence was more than symbolic—it was a public acknowledgment of the grassroots power behind the campaign and a pledge to continue fighting for housing justice alongside the people.
The July 27th action was not just a call for accountability—it was a celebration of progress, a display of unity, and a bold declaration that organized communities will continue to reclaim what
has long been neglected. As Reclaiming Chicago breaks ground on new homes, it is also breaking barriers, building power, and laying the foundation for a more just and livable city.
