When Daniela Meza Hernández arrived in Chicago from Colombia in September 2023, she was beginning a new chapter in her life. Like many newcomers, she faced the challenge of adapting to a new country, culture, and community while trying to find her place.
Just one month after arriving, Daniela learned about the Parent Mentor Program through the Southwest Organizing Project. Although she was interested, it wasn't until October 2024 that she officially joined the program at Mark Twain Elementary School. Looking back, she never imagined that working alongside children would become such an important part of her journey.
"I confess that I never thought I would be working with children like this," Daniela shared. "But it has been a wonderful experience learning so many new things."
What began as an opportunity to get involved in her community quickly became a pathway for personal and professional growth. Through her participation in the Parent Mentor Program, Daniela gained valuable experience in the classroom while also discovering new opportunities to continue her education and advance her career.
One of the most significant milestones came when she was able to transfer some of the studies she had completed in Colombia. Building on that foundation, Daniela worked toward earning her paraprofessional license through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). With determination and support, she successfully obtained her license in a relatively short period of time.
Earning her paraprofessional license represented much more than a professional achievement. It was proof that the education, skills, and experiences she brought with her from Colombia could help her build a future in her new home. Today, Daniela is actively seeking the right opportunity to begin working in the education field and put her newly earned credentials into practice.
Reflecting on her experience, Daniela says that the journey has transformed the way she sees herself and her future.
"When I first arrived in this country, I felt lost," she said. "Now I feel very much a part of it. Every day I continue improving and taking advantage of every opportunity that comes my way."
Daniela's story is one of resilience, perseverance, and embracing new possibilities. Through her willingness to step outside of her comfort zone, learn new skills, and pursue
her goals, she has turned uncertainty into opportunity and created a strong foundation for the future she is building in Chicago.
