At the Southwest Organizing Project, stories of growth and opportunity are often rooted in the determination of community members willing to take the next step toward their goals. For Angela Garcia, that next step was earning her paraprofessional license through the Parent Mentor Program’s Ladders of Opportunity initiative.
Born and raised in Chicago, Angela is the mother of two teenage boys, ages 14 and 17. Her journey toward becoming a paraprofessional began through her involvement in the Parent Mentor Program at her local elementary school, where she volunteers and stays actively engaged in her community.
Angela shared that the Ladders of Opportunity program became an important support system as she explored her career goals. Through the guidance of Angelica Ferreira, Angela was able to map out a path toward earning her paraprofessional license. Rather than simply pointing her in the right direction, Angelica took the time to meet with Angela personally, discuss her goals, and help her navigate the application process.
“She was able to help me apply for my paraprofessional license,” Angela shared. “Angelica sent me links to better prepare myself for taking the test.”
That preparation paid off. With the resources and encouragement provided through the program, Angela successfully passed her exam on the very first try. The support extended beyond study materials as well. On the day of the exam, Angelica showed up in person to encourage participants before they took their test.
For Angela, that level of care made a lasting impact. In addition to academic support, Angela also received help preparing for the next stage of her career journey. Jonathan, another member of the Ladders of Opportunity team, worked with her on building a resume, navigating job applications, and preparing for interviews.
Today, Angela already has an interview scheduled for a Substitute Special Education Classroom Assistant (SECA) position, with the goal of eventually securing a full-time SECA role.
Reflecting on her experience, Angela expressed deep appreciation for the people who supported her throughout the process.
“Ladders of Opportunity has made the process fast and easy to obtain my license,” she shared. “I greatly appreciate all the work they have put in to help me in my career path.”
Angela’s story is a reflection of how community support, mentorship, and determination can open new doors. Through programs like Ladders of Opportunity, SWOP continues helping community members build pathways toward meaningful careers while strengthening the communities they already serve every day.
