On August 23, 2025, the Southwest Organizing Project’s (SWOP) Healthy Southwest team hosted their bi-weekly Walk with a Doc (WWAD) event at Senka Park, bringing neighbors together to walk, learn, and build healthier habits.
This session focused on heart disease, one of the leading health concerns in the community and across the nation. A healthcare professional joined residents to discuss prevention, risk factors, and lifestyle choices that can support heart health. The conversation allowed participants to not only gain knowledge but also to ask questions in an friendly and supportive setting.
For SWOP, Walk with a Doc is about more than just exercise. These walks provide a space for community members to connect with each other and with healthcare providers in a welcoming environment. They encourage residents to prioritize wellness while strengthening community ties.
As one participant shared, “It feels good to know that we can learn about our health while also being outside with our neighbors. It makes the information more real and the changes easier to think about.”
With every walk, the Healthy Southwest team continues to build bridges between healthcare and the community—making health a collective journey.
