CLP Practicum Completion at Kennedy King College

On May 26th, 2026, the Community Learning Partnership (CLP) - Chicago celebrated a major milestone as participants, alumni, instructors, and community leaders gathered at Kennedy-King College for the CLP Practicum Completion Celebration. The event marked the completion of the first CLP cohort fully supported through City Colleges of Chicago with a college-credit pathway, creating new opportunities for aspiring community organizers to pursue organizing and community development as a recognized educational and career pathway. By connecting community-based learning with higher education, CLP is helping equip residents with the knowledge, skills, and credentials needed to create meaningful change in their neighborhoods while opening doors to future academic and professional opportunities.

The celebration brought together students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences who spent months learning the fundamentals of Community Organizing and Community Development. Throughout the evening, participants reflected on the relationships they built, the lessons they learned, and the personal growth they experienced through the program. Several students shared testimonies about their journey through the practicum, speaking honestly about the challenges they faced when they first began. While some admitted they were unsure what to expect and struggled to adjust to the coursework and expectations, they found themselves becoming deeply engaged in the learning process as the months progressed.

A common theme throughout the testimonies was the impact of learning the practice of one-to-one relational meetings. Students spoke about how these conversations helped them better understand their communities, build authentic relationships, and identify shared concerns and aspirations. Beyond learning organizing skills, participants emphasized the sense of community that developed within their cohort. What began as a group of strangers gradually evolved into a supportive network of peers who encouraged one another, shared experiences, and celebrated each other's successes.

The evening also highlighted the importance of connection across cohorts. Alumni from the previous CLP cohort attended the celebration, offering encouragement and sharing their own experiences with participants who had just completed their practicum. Their presence served as a reminder that the learning and relationships built through CLP extend far beyond the classroom. By bringing together graduates from different cohorts, the celebration helped strengthen a growing network of community leaders committed to advancing positive change throughout Chicago.

As students received recognition for completing their practicum, the atmosphere was filled with pride, gratitude, and excitement for what lies ahead. The completion celebration was not only a recognition of individual achievement but also a testament to the power of investing in community leadership development. With the support of City Colleges of Chicago and community partners, CLP continues to create pathways for residents to strengthen their organizing skills, earn college credit, and become leaders capable of building stronger, more connected communities.

For the graduates, the evening marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Armed with new knowledge, stronger relationships, and a deeper understanding of community organizing, they leave the program prepared to continue creating change in their neighborhoods and inspiring others to do the same.

With the next classes coming in the Fall, CLP organizers and leaders are eager to get the next cohort up and running in both English and Spanish. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the CLP program, visit us here: https://shorturl.at/f87HY
