On August 14th, 2025, the Southwest Organizing Project’s (SWOP) Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P) team joined forces with Sawyer Elementary and community partners to host the 3rd Annual Back to School Block Party.
The event transformed the block into a vibrant space filled with music, laughter, and resources for families preparing for the upcoming school year. Rows of community organizations lined the street, providing critical resources and information. Families enjoyed a variety of activities including a live band, DJ, food, a bouncy house, a game truck, and even a dunk tank. To ensure every child was ready for the first day of school, free backpacks and school supplies were distributed to anyone in need.
For many families, this event was more than just a day of fun—it was a lifeline. One community member shared, “These resources mean so much to me and my family. It’s not always easy to get everything our kids need for school, so having this every year really helps. I’m grateful that our community comes together to make sure no one is left behind.”
By combining joy with support, the Back to School Block Party highlighted what community looks like at its best—neighbors, schools, and organizations standing together to create safe spaces and provide the tools children need to succeed
