On May 30th, 2025, the Southwest Organizing Project’s (SWOP) Parent Mentor Program gathered for a warm and joyful celebration at Lionel Hampton Fine & Performing Arts School. The event brought together Parent Mentors from local schools to reflect on everything they’ve accomplished throughout the year. From supporting teachers in classrooms to helping students with their academics, the Parent Mentors have remained a steady, positive presence in their school communities. The celebration was a chance to honor their hard work, recognize the relationships they’ve built, and spotlight the personal growth many Parent Mentors experienced as leaders in their schools.
Throughout the event, Parent Mentors shared stories of how the program has impacted their lives — not just as volunteers in classrooms, but as advocates and leaders in their communities. Several mentors spoke about how being part of the program helped them gain confidence, form lasting friendships, and feel more connected to their children’s schools. The celebration also included acknowledgments for individual mentors and schools, food, music, and plenty of opportunities for parents and staff to enjoy time together outside of their regular school routines.
With summer quickly approaching, SWOP’s Parent Mentor Program is already looking ahead. The team is gearing up for a new recruitment season, searching for parents and caregivers who are interested in growing their leadership skills and taking a more active role in shaping their children’s education. SWOP remains committed to investing in parents as leaders, knowing that when families are engaged and empowered, schools and communities are stronger.
