Member Institution – Evening Star M.B. Church

The Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) is excited to announce its newest member institution, Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church, a long-standing pillar in the West Englewood community. With over 50 years of dedicated service, Evening Star has provided not only spiritual guidance but also critical resources to neighborhood residents.

Under the leadership of Pastor Darryl D. Chew, Evening Star operates the largest food pantry in West Englewood, supplying fresh produce weekly to families in need. The church also hosts an annual back-to-school drive, ensuring that local children are equipped with the supplies they need to succeed. Now, Evening Star is embarking on an ambitious new project: transforming its church space into a thriving community center called the Star of Englewood.

With the support of SWOP and GoodKids-MadCity Englewood, Evening Star aims to expand its services to reach even more community members. The Star of Englewood will serve as a hub for vital programs, including computer classes, after-school activities, and financial literacy workshops. They will also look to allowing other faiths to use to space for their own congregations for those who may not have a place to convene. By providing these resources, Evening Star hopes to create a safe and welcoming environment for both young people and older adults to connect, learn, and grow together.

Evening Star’s partnership with SWOP represents a shared commitment to uplifting the community through collaboration and meaningful action. As they work together on future initiatives, both organizations look forward to bringing much-needed resources and opportunities to West Englewood and beyond.

For more information on how to support Evening Star’s efforts or to get involved with SWOP, please reach out to either organization. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected community.
