On February 18th, 2025, the Community Learning Partnership (CLP) Community Development class had a unique learning opportunity as they visited Palenque LSNA, a community organization dedicated to empowering residents and fostering community growth. This visit offered a refreshing change from their usual meetings at Arturo Velasquez College, allowing students to engage directly with organizers working on the ground in Chicago.
The session began with a warm exchange of introductions, setting the stage for an open and inclusive dialogue. Students and organizers gathered in a circle, sharing their thoughts and feelings on gentrification and community development. The conversation was rich and dynamic, highlighting the complexities of preserving community identity while navigating change.
After the group discussion, participants broke out into smaller groups to dive deeper into Palenque’s various initiatives. Students learned about the organization’s innovative approaches to giving power to youth, including them in decision-making processes, and fostering their development as leaders. They also explored Palenque’s work in housing and community development, gaining insight into how the organization actively resists displacement and advocates for equitable growth.
This immersive experience provided CLP students with an invaluable opportunity to ask questions and hear firsthand how Palenque LSNA strategically leverages its influence to bring about positive change. By connecting classroom concepts with real-world activism, students left with a deeper understanding of community power dynamics and the vital role of youth in shaping the future of their neighborhoods.
The visit to Palenque LSNA was more than just a change of venue—it was a transformative learning experience that brought the realities of community development to life.
